Protéger les livres, mais également les embellir, les réparer, démaquiller les outrages du temps, leur donner une seconde vie ou créer de nouveaux spécimens, la reliure est une étape importante, voire cruciale, qui donne un vrai sens artistique à l’activité. On peut distinguer trois types de reliure, la plus classique, d’art et la restauration. Pour cet atelier, vous aurez sans doute besoin d’une cisaille de reliure que vous trouverez sur Internet.

Le relieur met tout en œuvre pour garantir aux livres une meilleure longévité. De son intervention va dépendre l’apparence de la reliure. Que le livre reste dans une bibliothèque ou qu’il voyage entre de nombreuses mains, la reliure est essentielle. Par elle la valeur fonctionnelle du livre s’enrichit d’une valeur esthétique. Le premier contact que l’on a avec un livre, c’est le visuel, la couverture, la reliure. Il faut donc qu’elle soit réussie, pleine de promesses, et donner envie aux lecteurs de s’attarder sur le livre. Le relieur peut travailler sur un livre sans jamais l’avoir lu. Il commence par le démonter, le décoller avant de recomposer l’ouvrage, rassembler les cahiers en les cousant ensemble.

La reliure, l’équilibre du livre

Le défi du relieur, réussir à assimiler l’ouvrage afin de lui donner une consistance. Les relieurs reproduisent depuis des siècles les mêmes gestes techniques minutieux à cause en particulier au temps de séchage et de mise en presse. Le relieur est le bout de la chaîne de production du livre. Il en est l’acteur essentiel. Aujourd’hui on confie le plus souvent au relieur doreur des ouvrages courants pour une reliure simple, mais aussi plus rarement des manuscrits précieux pour lesquels une reliure d’art est réalisée. Pour un livre ordinaire, il va assembler les pages imprimées, les plier puis les coudre à la machine. Ce métier exige de la patience, de la minutie, une grande concentration et l’amour des livres.
